The Dean of the School of Nuclear Physics at Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany, Professor Dieter Hoffmann, who previously was the Leader of the Plasma Group at GSI, visited IMP(Institute of Modern Physics), CAS recently. Prof. Hoffmann is the famous expert in the fields of plasma physics and inertial confinement fusion physics.  He met Prof. Wenlong Zhan, the Academician of CAS, and Prof. Guoqing Xiao, the director of IMP respectively. They exchanged their ideas in the researches on the related frontier subjects and the perspectives, including the high energy density physics generated by intense heavy ion beams, the inertial confinement fusion, and the high energy proton radiography. Dr Dmitry Varentsov, who is in charge of the high energy density physics and the high energy proton radiography at GSI, visited IMP with Prof. Hoffmann.

During their visit, the two experts gave lectures on the high energy density physics, the high energy proton radiography, and the inertial confinement fusion. They also had discussions with researchers of IMP.  The two visitors spoke highly of the Heavy Ion Cooling and Storage Ring (CSR) constructed by IMP. They also gave precious suggestions for the research at CSR, and expressed their expectations for the research advance and bilateral collaboration in this field.

High energy density generated by intense heavy ion beams, inertial confinement fusion, and high energy ion/proton radiography are the important research fields at IMP. This visit helped the researchers at IMP understand further the key and explicit problems in these research fields. The researchers agree that now is the best time for IMP to develop researches on high energy density physics and high energy proton radiography, and the current urgent work is to construct the related beam lines and experiment platforms behind the main ring of CSR.
