Lanzhou Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was established in 1954. Seven institutes are affiliated to the Branch, namely, the Institute of Modern Physics, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Cold and Arid Regions Environment and Engineering Research Institute, Qinghai Institute of Salt Lake Research, Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology, Lanzhou Oil and Gas Research Center and Lanzhou Branch of National Library of Sciences.

For the past 60 years, the institutes in Lanzhou Branch have achieved a series of achievements, which contributed greatly to the nation’s science and technology. Lanzhou Branch has focused on the special natural and ecological environment in China’s western part, carried out a series of large-scale field surveys in the research of desert, glacier, frozen soil, salt lake, and Tibet Plateau wild life. The work has helped to clarify the natural resource distribution in the concerned areas. At the same time, the institutes in Lanzhou Branch have carried out in-depth research in the field of heavy ion physics, nuclear radiation technology, selective oxidation and catalysis, oil and gas geology, prevention of desertification, railway construction in Tibet Plateau, permafrost control, and plateau climatology. A range of internationally acknowledged results have been achieved. Since 1978, a great number of achievements have been obtained. The work has won approximately 650 national or provincial awards. New Technology for Cis-butadiene Rubber Production and Shapotou Railway Desert Stabilizing System has won the National Top Award of Science and Technology Progress respectively.

Since the implementation of CAS’s Project of Knowledge Innovation Program, Lanzhou Branch has played an active role in coordinating its subordinating research institutes and providing convenience for the research staff to better concentrate on research. Tibetan Railway Engineering and Frozen Soil Interaction and Its Environmental Effect Research program has clarified temperature changes over the past 50 years, which provided a key technological support to the construction of Tibetan railway. The Ninth-Five-Year Plan Key Science Project, the HIRFL-Cooler Storage Ring (CSR) produced the expected or beyond expectation beams, which set new records in accelerated energy and ion beam intensity.

Lanzhou Branch has set a clear goal for attracting and developing research human forces. Now, a group of energetic, young research teams is established through various talents programs, for example, One Hundred Talents Program, Western Lighting Talents Program, and Overseas Outstanding Talents Attraction Program.

One of the important tasks for Lanzhou Branch is to promote social and economic development for the local areas. In recent years, Lanzhou Branch has been working positively to cooperate with local governments and enterprises to meet the strategic social and economic needs. Lanzhou Branch welcome all kinds of collaborations from various institutions to promote CAS’s Knowledge Innovation Program to a new, harmonious phase, to make further contribution to the development of S & T in China and social and economic development of western China.
