Research Professor Yingkai Xiao Delivers a Lecture

  On August 29, 2008 afternoon, Yingkai Xiao, research professor of our institute, gave an academic course, and the topic was research development of saline lakes boron chlorine isotope geochemistry in our country, which was lasted for three hours.

  This academic course was to give fundamental training to our geosciences teachers and students, especially the graduate students, and made them understand the application of isotope geochemistry in the saline lake related research.

  For more than two decades, research professor Xiao and his research team have been engaged in the study of isotope mass spectrum determination method, thermoionization theory, isotope chemistry and geochemistry. The Boron isotope determination method they established is in the leading position of the world now. It has been already widely used by researchers and scholars of US, UK, France, Italy and Japan. Research professor Xiao and his research team's works has been published on International Journal of Mass Spectrometry and Ion Processes, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, Chemical Geology, Science in China, And also they had published the monograph Graphite Thermoelectric emission Characteristic And Application. Their work new method of element isotope mass spectrum determines and its application research, which he was in charge of, had won several prizes, including the National Natural Science Award for the second at 1997, Qinghai Province outstanding paper one and third prize, two second prizes of Natural Sciences of Chinese Academy, one first prize of State Educational Committee's award on scientific and technological progress, and second prize of Qinghai Scientific and technological progress.

  In his report, research professor Xiao elaborated the establishment of boron and chlorine isotope mass spectrum determination method, the boron and chlorine isotope geochemistry characteristics in Saline lakes, and the environmental meaning of boron and chlorine isotope in salt lake or salt water. Firstly, he introduced the High accuracy boron and chlorine isotope determination method, which was the only establishment based on the character of Graphite non-heat reduction ion emission in the word. These methods have been widely used around the world, and have become the mainstream method of Boron and chlorine isotope determination.

  Then Mr. Xiao explained the principle of boron and chlorine isotope fractionation, the characters of boron and chlorine isotope geochemistry and comparison results of several regions (big tsaidam saline lake, typical saline lakes of Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Lake). This revealed the impact factors of boron, chlorine isotope geochemistry characters in salt lake. Finally, by the study of the boron and chlorine isotope in the process of Halite deposition, coral and sea water invasion, mix of salty and fresh water at Yangtze River estuary, he revealed that salt lake bittern and compositions of boron and chlorine isotopic in its deposition are new environment index of saline lakes, and had important instruction significance in the mineralization conditions of salt lakes.
