On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of P.R. China, All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF) announced its National “March 8(International Women's Day)” Red-Banner Pacesetteraward-giving decision. 2000 individual National “March 8” Red-Banner pacesetters and 1000 National “March 8” Red-Banner collectives were honored. Dr. Hong Zhang, who is a professor at IMP(Institute of Modern Physics), CAS and the director of the Gansu Key Laboratory of Heavy Ion Beam Application in Radiology, is on the list of the 2000 Red-Banner pacesetters.
When she was a Ph. D. student, for the first time in the world, Dr Zhang obtained the direct evidence for capacitating sperm producing active oxygen by using the spin trap method. The paper was published in the Free Radic Res (1996;24:261-268),which elected the paper as the most representative one among the papers in the three years from 1996 to 1998. When she worked at the No.1 hospital attached to Lanzhou Medical College, she was in charge of two Gansu natural science fund projects, which were appraised by the experts and won the second and third prizes in Gansu Medical Science respectively. When she was doing her postdoctoral research at IMP, she proposed and confirmed that using small dosage of heavy ion irradiation in advance reduces evidently the damages to male germen by large dosage irradiation. The result of her research is significant both to the theory and clinical application of protecting the fertilization of the patients under radiotherapy. Her working experiences at Medical School of Bonn University in Germany (sponsored by DAAD Fund of the German government) and the Department of Biology at Delaware University in the United States of America during the period from 1998 to 2003 have accumulated abundant clinical and scientific research experiences, as well as the medical and biological basic knowledge and experiment skills for her. In 2002, she was elected by the 100 Talents program of CAS. From August 2003, she has been working at IMP focusing on the research in heavy ion radiobiological effect and basic and clinical study in heavy ion cancer therapy. She has performed several molecule biology, cell biology and animal experiments related to the clinical trial in heavy ion cancer therapy; she drafted the Industry Standard for Tumor Therapy by Heavy Ion Beam via Heavy Ion accelerator-producing(Trial); she has established the Clinical Study Base for Heavy Ion Beam Tumor Therapy in Gansu Province, and The Gansu Key Laboratory of Heavy Ion Beam Application Radiology; she has performed the clinical trial of 103 cases using heavy ion beam for shallow-seated tumors, and has achieved significant results; she has set up the animal model bearing deep-seated tumors, and performed the carbon ion radiation experiment; she is in charge of the heavy ion therapy for the first 6 patients with deep-seated tumors, and has achieved significant results. She is now in charge of several national, provincial and ministry scientific research projects. She has won the third prize in Gansu Natural Science (in the year of 2007), the first prize in Gansu Medical Science (in the year of 2008), and the first prize in Gansu Science and Technology Advancement (in 2008). Dr Zhang has published more than 100 papers in the core journals at home and abroad, with over 50 papers being published in SCI and cited more than 200 times. She edited the chapter of The Function of Active Oxygen in Procreation and Growth in the book of Theory and Application of Free Radical Biology published by the Science Press. 7 Ph.D. students and 4 M.S. ones have obtained their degrees with the supervision of Dr. Zhang. She is now supervising 3 Ph.D. students, 2 M.S. students and 3 postdoctoral researchers.
The Title of National “March 8” Red-Banner pacesetter was first awarded in 1960, and is the most influential and glittering honor for Chinese women. More than 30000 excellent women and 10000 collectivities have been awarded this honor in China. |
