The 5-person delegation from South China Agricultural University (SCAU)led by Prof. Chen Zhiqiang, vice president of South China Agricultural University and head of National Space Breeding Centre, visited Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMP, CAS) on July 5.
During their visit, Prof. Chen Zhiqiang presented an excellent lecture on space breeding in plant, in which he showed the achievements and experiences in rice quality improvement by space breeding, and prospected the great chance in mutation breeding with Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou(HIRFL). Prof. Mei Mantong from SCAU gave a talk titled “Manned space flight and radiobiology”, in which she emphasized the fundamentality and necessity of ground-based experiments by simulating radiation space environment for mission to the moon or Mars. Prof. Li Wenjian from IMP reported the achievements in mutation breeding with heavy ions radiation.
The delegates of both sides discussed in detail the agreement between SCAU and IMP for scientific cooperation. The agreement, covering the research on mechanism of radiation breeding, selection of better varieties and industrialization, education for graduate students and so on, paved the way for further collaboration. |
