The second meeting of International Advisory Committee of Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL-IAC) was held in Lanzhou from October 7 to 8, 2010. Prof. G. Münzenberg, the HIRFL-IAC director and the heavy ion physicist from Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung mbH (GSI) in Germany, presided over the meeting. 17 experts of heavy ion physics and accelerator from France, U.S.A, Japan, Russia, Germany, and China attended the meeting.
IAC experts put forward a lot of valuable suggestions on physics research and facility development of HIRFL. They suggested that the development of facility should be closely combined with the needs of scientific research, Institute of Modern Physics (IMP), CAS should promote actively the construction of new injector, the cancer therapy setup, ADS and other new facilities.
The Committee members expressed appreciation for the nuclear physics research progress that made in short period of time, they proposed a priority support to the research on chemical properties of superheavy elements, gas-filled spectrometer experiment, atomic physics, nuclear astrophysics, hadron physics and massive parallel computing.
The Committee spoke highly of the application research achievements on irradiated material, irradiation breeding and heavy ion cancer therapy, etc. in the case of very limited beam time at HIRFL, and suggested the energetic promotion of the relevant application achievements.
Committee advised that it is necessary to increase the number of researchers and doctoral students to meet the demand of physics research and facility development of HIRFL, and called on to further strengthen the international cooperation between IMP and other research institutions.
