The scientific evaluation meeting for international collaborative study on Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) project, which was organized by the Department of International Cooperation of MOST, was held at Institute of Modern Physics (IMP), CAS in Lanzhou on 21st October, 2010. The Project collaborative study undertaken by IMP received high evaluation and gained the acceptance of experts.

According to the physics objectives of FAIR project, the research group for this project has finished the R&D of prototype and high integrated electronics for CsI detector, PWO crystal detector, Si micro-strip detector, Micromegas detector, beam and dosage monitoring detector etc., and performed the physics and applied researches related to PANDA, CBM, SPARC and HEDgeHOB research program based on institutes of GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Germany and IMP in China. Significant research results have been obtained in the fields of hadron physics, nucleus-nucleus collision, radioactive ion beam (RIB) physics, high energy density physics, material science, and heavy ion cancer therapy. Notable achievements were scored in the research of heavy ion cancer therapy, for example, the accomplishment of the R&D of heavy ion therapy technology, the clinical trials of heavy-ion radiotherapy for 111 tumor patients, the original design of IMP for the heavy ion therapy special facility with the smallest circumference value in the world.

The members of the evaluation committee performed the site inspection, and reviewed the documents and presentation given by the project coordinator. The committee agreed that the international collaborative research on FAIR project has realized the research objectives, introduced advanced technologies and ideas for scientific research, solved the key technique problems, and trained young scientific researchers. It was unanimously agreed that the project passed the evaluation.

Experts from MOST, Gansu Provincial Sci. & Tech. Department, Huazhong Normal University, Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, CAS, Inner Mongolia University, Institute of High Energy Physics, CAS, Lanzhou University, and Gansu Academy of Sciences attended the meeting.
