Three varieties of Sorghum bicolor Moench have been bred by heavy ion irradiation in Institute of Modern Physics((IMP), CAS. The three varieties are KF0680-01, KF0680-02 and BJ0602 which have independent intellectual property rights. On November 26th, 2010, these varieties were approved by technical evaluation meeting, organized by Gansu Provincial Sci. & Tech. Department(GPSTD) and hosted by Lanzhou Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences(LBCAS).

The appraisal committee all approved that it is for the first time that China uses heavy ion beam irradiation to breed Sorghum bicolor Moench. KF0680-02, a new variety of Sorghum bicolor Moench by heavy ion irradiation, has good agronomic characters and high industrial development value, thus it has reached international advanced level. KF0680-01 and BJ0602, another two varieties of Sorghum bicolor Moench, are worth popularizing, and they are in the level of excellence in domestic.

Besides, appraisal committee suggested that cultivation technique researches on variety KF0680-02 should be further strengthened, and that variety KF0680-01 and variety BJ0602 should be further and deeply studied in terms of ecological adaptation.

Sorghum bicolor Moench, as a C4 plant, has high photosynthetic efficiency and the world’s highest biomass, so it is called “high energy crop”. IMP has established industrial chain based on circular economic of Sweet Sorghum which develops yeast products and good fodder. It can help ease energy shortage and environmental pressure and furthermore, it has the potential of improving agricultural planting structure, revitalizing rural economy, increasing rural incomes, and promoting the new rural construction
