A seven-day workshop on stochastic cooling research was successfully held at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMP) from June 10 to 17, 2011. The workshop purpose was to explore a stochastic cooling system at CSRe (the Experimental ring of HIRFL-CSR). HIRFL-CSR is a new heavy ion cooler-storage ring synchrotron system in Lanzhou, China. It consists of a main ring(CSRm) and an experimental ring (CSRe) with multiusages and multi-functions.

This is a new form of workshop, which consisted of lectures, experiments and discussions on the stochastic cooling research.Five professional lectures about stochastic cooling and microwave sensors for particle accelerators were given at the workshop. RF-microwave pick-up for stochastic cooling and the beam position monitor (BPM) were measured in the experiments. Prof. Fritz Caspers, the expert of RF microwave and stochastic cooling from CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), Prof. Fritz Nolden and Prof. Takeshi Katayama, the experts of stochastic cooling from GSI (Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung mbH), together with about 20 IMP research staffs and graduate students, attended the lectures, experiments and discussions. The IMP related staffs and students’ ability to research were improvedvery well via the combination of theory with practice.

In particular, the foreign experts made some professional recommendations. They indicated that a combination of stochastic pre-cooling and subsequent electron cooling would be needed to get overall cooling times of the order of 10 seconds for injected secondary heavy ion beams and beams cooled by electron cooling to equilibrium phase space density. Therefore the development of a stochastic cooling system would be very useful for performing competitive experiments with secondary rare isotope beams.

The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to communicate the advances in stochastic cooling and highlighted the potential cooperation between IMP and scientific groups in this field both in China and overseas.

The stochastic cooling workshop was organized by the Beam Diagnostics Team at  IMP, for more information of the  workshop , please check link http://english.imp.cas.cn/ns/ue/201106/t20110614_71210.html
