The Institute of Modern Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMP) and Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) drafted a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for partnership in nuclear physics and accelerator technology.
Dr. Robert McKeown, the deputy Director for Science at Jefferson Lab, visited the IMP from July 2nd to 4th, 2011. He expressed strong desire for collaboration with IMP in areas of mutual interest such as accelerator technology, nuclear physics and detector development. Emphasis was made in the initial agreement that IMP will play a role in the development of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detector for the 12GeV energy upgrade project at Jefferson Lab and Jefferson Lab will contribute to the work of super-conducting Linac Accelerator at the IMP as well.
Following a presentation on the status and outlook for future research in Jefferson Lab, Dr. McKeown visited the Cooler Storage Ring (CSR), the 320kV ECRIS Platform for multiple-research with highly charged ions, the super-conducting high-frequency laboratory and other facilities at the IMP.
Jefferson Lab is a U.S. national laboratory that was founded in 1984 with over 675 employees and over 2,000 scientists from around the world. Its stated mission is "to provide forefront scientific facilities, opportunities and leadership essential for discovering the fundamental structure of nuclear matter”.
