In recognition of his outstanding achievements in tribology, especially for his meritorious work in the field of aerospace applications, the 2011 Tribology Gold Medal, the world’s highest award in this field, was conferred on Prof. XUE Qunji, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the academic committee of the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics (LICP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
The Gold Medal and Parchment was presented at the Embassy in Beijing by HE Ambassador, Mr. Sebstian Wood CMG on February 27, 2012.
Prof. XUE is one of the world’s outstanding and influential tribologist of the last forty years. He is responsible for starting the Laboratory of Solid Lubrication in Lanzhou. Under his leadership the Laboratory became the State Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication in CAS. It has grown to be the largest group in tribology research in China and acknowledged to be one of the most successful ones. It has made a valuable contribution to the economy of China, especially in the areas of reduction of costs, energy losses, friction and wear, leading to increased reliability and lifetime of many industrial applications.
This prestigious award, administered by the United Kingdom Institution of Mechanical Engineers, is internationally recognized as the highest honor in tribology research and application. The gold medal is awarded to those who have made significant contributions to tribology.
Tribology is the science and technology of friction and wear which affects all our lives.
