The researchers of the State Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication of Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, CAS, investigated the tribological behaviors of tungsten carbide (WC) based cermet/Ti3SiC2 tribo-pair at elevated temperatures and studied in detail the tribo-physical and tribo-chemical changes on sliding surfaces.

The results indicated that wear rates for both Ti3SiC2 and WC-based cermet decreased with increasing the testing temperature while friction coefficient mildly varied.

Tungsten-based cemented carbides (WC) are widely used in metal cutting, rock drilling tools, and wear parts in various applications for their excellent mechanical properties, outstanding wear resistance and high toughness. Layered carbide-like ternary compound Ti3SiC2 is an important candidate machinable ceramic, structural ceramic for high-temperature application, and electrode used for metal smelting owing to its combination of best attributes of both metal and ceramics. The tribological behavior of Ti3SiC2 is also an interesting topic, especially for those at high temperature.

The research was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the West Doctor Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Knowledge Innovation Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The research result was published in the recent issue of Tribology International (Tribology International 43 (2010) 512-517).
