"Development and Application Demonstration of New Materials for Afforestation in Difficult Sites” project undertaken by the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics (LICP), CAS, passed the acceptance test organized by the Bureau of High-Technology Research and Development of the CAS in Beijing. The project was supported by the CAS Action-plan for the Development of Western China

The acceptance committee headed by FENG Zongwei, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, heard the summary report made by the project leader Prof. WANG Aiqin and watched the video of the application demonstration of the new materials in Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (JSLC). After inquires and discussion, the committee held that the acceptance materials submitted were complete and conformed to the standards. Through 3 years of work, all the tasks outlined in the task document have been fulfilled. Therefore, the project was approved to pass the acceptance test.

In order to raise the survival rate of trees in JSLC, the project group has developed various new materials for afforestation in accordance with the saline and sodic soils and water in JSLC, such as organic/inorganic composite soil improvement materials, humic acid slow-released water-preserving composites, new antievaporating materials of surface water, multi-functional composites, etc. The special materials and integration technology with independent intellectual property right have been developed. The area in which the new materials have been applied for demonstration reaches 580 mu and the average survival rate of the trees is as high as 95%. The protection activity rate after 3 years is as high as 90%.

The project has provided new techniques and materials for the afforestation in hardening soil and saline and sodic soils.
