The feasibility of the Big Molecular Research Platform at HIRFL-CSRe(Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou-Cooling Storage Experimental Ring)  project was evaluated by an expert group at the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP), CAS on June 28.

Dissociative recombination (DR) reactions of molecular ions are the fundamental processes in the formation of interstellar clouds and primeval universe. Among the presently operated facilities for molecular ion DR studies in the world, the Big Molecular Research Platform at HIRFL-CSRe(Figure 1) is expected to have the highest magnetic rigidity. It will open a new window by extending the mass range of molecular ions, offering good opportunities for DR research, with notably improved resolution. The project may make the HIRFL-CSRe a unique and powerful experimental platform in molecular physics at storage rings in the world. It could also improve the operation efficiency of the HIRFL through adding a new injector.

The physics design, main parameters of the injection beam line and the injection into the CSRe of molecular ions, and the key reform techniques were presented by Prof. CAI Xiaohong and Dr. YANG Jiancheng in the expert evaluation. 14 experts from Northwest Institute of Nuclear Technology, Institute of High Energy Physics, CAS, Tsinghua University, Lanzhou University, Northwest Normal University, and IMP, CAS, discussed the scheme in detail.

It is evaluated by the expert group that the project is of highly scientific significance, the research goal is explicit, and the technical details and key problems are highly deliberated. Although the key technique offers a challenge, it is surmountable. Therefore, the scheme of the project is feasible.

The expert group suggested that the project should be launched as soon as possible. The matching of the injection system should be optimized. A set of weak beam measurement equipment and neutral particle detection system were proposed to be developed preferentially, and to be tested online at the CSRe.
