Li Yulin and his team found a new alternative method for the rapid enrichment, separation, and purification of four anthraquinones (emodin, aloe-emodin, physcione, and chrysophanol) from Rheum tanguticum.

This efficient strategy based on liquid–liquid extraction, high-speed counter-current chromatography, and preparative HPLC. The new solvent system composed of petroleum ether/ethyl acetate/water (4:2:1, v/v/v) was developed for the liquid–liquid extraction of the crude extract from R. tanguticum.

Conditions: column: Agilent Eslipse-XDB C18 (250 × 4.6 mm, 5

mobile phase: methanol/water (methanol: 0–20 min, 80–90%);

flow rate: 1.0 mL/min; column temperature: 25
